I was not super hyped for UFC 112. The card was good on paper and should sell well since it had two title fights. I was not hyped to see Anderson Silva easily beat Maia and Penn out box Edgar. It’s BJ Penn and Anderson Silva, most people say their division are practically emptied out of competition for them. Those two guys are basically unbeatable. I did not expect Maia or Edgar to win. I was wrong in one case. Upon watching the card I was glad I decided to.

Edgar beat Penn WOW I was not expecting that to happen. It was a close fight to me it all comes down to round 3. I had it scored 3-2 in favor of Edgar, I try not to do 10-10 rounds. Was it a close fight? Absolutely. Was it a robbery? No. Penn did not look like Penn, he seemed slower and his knee looked damaged. I don’t know how someone scored it 50-45 for Edgar though there is no way he won all 5 rounds. The idiocy of judging in MMA is often pointed out. As Dana White says “Don’t leave it in the hands of the judges!”, and I’m sure this (Penn vs. Edgar) will be written about here, there, and everywhere in the coming days.

Anderson Silva danced around and “clowned” Demian Maia. I have hearddifferent takes from people who either loved it or utterly hated it. Personally it did not bug me, at first it was funny. Did anyone really expect Maia to win baring a miracle of a takedown? After about 3 minutes into round 2 Silva began to annoy me. He clearly proved he was truly better than his opponents so why not go show it and finish the guy? What’s next for Silva? No idea he looks like he wants a challenge or someone he perceives as a challenge.

Admittedly not being completely enthused by this card I really didn’t pay much attention to the entire card. I was gladly mistaken as my two favorite bouts came from the first 2 fights. Grove vs. Munoz opened with a wonderful display of BJJ in round 1, in round 2 Munoz was able to come back and power Grove around and get a TKO. Then we had Terry Etim against Rafael Dos Anjos. This was a exciting fight also and had a nice arm bar finish in Dos Anjos’ favour.

There was something about the crowd in Abu Dubai. They came across as happy. Now most UFC crowds are happy of course, but there was something about this crowd in particular that seemed more pure. To a degree it seemed like it was mix of a Japanese crowd and American crowd, there was the respect and also the chaotic party atmosphere.

Just last night the UFC landscape was shaken up with news that UFC Middleweight #1 contender, Vitor Belfort, would have to pull out of his fight for the Middleweight title against the Middleweight king, Anderson Silva. Vitor had to withdraw from the highly anticipated bout due to a shoulder injury he sustained during training. Although it was just announced yesterday afternoon that Vitor would be pulling out of the fight, Vitor sustained the injury several weeks ago and continued to train using only one arm, hoping that the injury would heal and he would be able to fight.

Although originally assumed that Chael Sonnen would take the place of Vitor in the title fight, it has now been confirmed that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ace Demian Maia will step in and face Silva for his belt at UFC 112 in the evenings Main Event. Demian Maia is 12-1 in MMA overall and 6-1 inside the UFC’s octagon. Of those 6 wins, 5 have come by submission with 4 of those wins earning him “Submission of the Night” honors. Demian Maia most recently rebounded from a loss, defeating Dan Miller at UFC 109 via Unanimous Decision.

With Anderson finally set to defend his belt, we will see a fight that has been deemed as “the best striker in MMA vs. the best grappler in MMA,”. Also set for the card at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi is a long anticipated match up between former 2 time UFC Welterweight champion Matt Hughes and Renzo Gracie as well as a co-main event in which BJ Penn will defend his UFC Lightweight title against Frankie Edgar.
