Strikeforce came at us once again with something that is only Strikeforce. I have come to see Strikeforce cards as entertaining but not always the most relevant in terms of fights. Without a doubt there are fights that matter. The Fancy Pants vs. Shaolin fight on the undercard could set up who might face Gilbert Melendez next. Something we didn’t see so if that fight is made who really is going to know who these guys are? Another big fight on the card was the “Jacare” Souza vs. Joey Villaseñor middleweight bout that could easily set up who will fight for the Middleweight title next depending on what Shields does next. Also to open the show Rafael Cavalcante was able to come from behind and score a KO over Antwain Britt. Calvacante will most likely fight King Mo next for his Light Heavyweight title somewhere down the line.

Never the less this card was entertaining. We got to see one of the best grapplers in the world, Roger Gracie, fight in the cage against Kevin Randleman, once again not the most relevant fight but it was entertaining. The Co-Main event of the evening was an important fight as it would decide who would be slightly relevant in the Heavyweight division in Strikeforce, as well as the overall MMA Heavyweight rankings. Andrei Arlovski didn’t look like “The Pitbull”, the man who was really beating Fedor ’til he threw the knee in their fight. I hate to say it but he kind of reminded me of Cro Cop in his fight with Junior Dos Santos back at UFC 103. He just looked tentative and not as ferocious and quick as he used to. He couldn’t seem to get through the defense of Antonio Silva. Silva was able to land some good shots on Arlovski and really out box him for the entire fight. Silva would go on to take a Unanimous Decision with scores of 29-28 across the boards. I had the fight scored 30-27 in favor of Silva but you could argue Arlovski won the last bit of the second round.

The main event was quick, short and something the casual fan would enjoy. Alistair Overeem made his return, finally defending the belt after 2 and half years away from the Strikeforce banner, fighting in DREAM and K-1 up until last night. His opponent would be Brett Rogers, last seen losing to Fedor on Strikeforce’s CBS debut back in November. There have been arguments that Brett didn’t deserve to fight Overeem but really who were they going to give him? Bigfoot was already tapped to fight Arlovski and Werdum is already tied up with Fedor next month. The lack of depth on Strikeforce’s roster forced this fight to happen and I didn’t really mind it. Rogers was originally slated to face Overeem earlier on in his career but instead got fights with Arlovski and Fedor. Rogers did not look good last night. He looked tentative and reluctant to engage his opponent. This was not the same Rogers who came storming at Arlovski and Fedor. Overeem was able stay distant and eventually trip Rogers to the ground and from there tee off with vicious ground and pound as Rogers assumed the fetal position, allowing Overeem to claim the TKO victory in the 1st round.

In his post fight Interview Overeem called out Fedor’s management on the reason for him not fighting Fedor. That fight is the only logical next step for Overeem and Strikeforce. Fedor is favoured to beat Werdum which would result in two wins against Strikeforce’s best and lead to a future title shot. Now if this happens or not revolves around M-1 Global and their willingness to take a risk for probably the biggest fight Strikeforce could make since Cyborg vs. Carano.
As for Strikeforce’s commentary, well it’s time for a change….that’s all that needs to be said.

This will not focus on the post fight antics that occurred during the Henderson vs. Shields fight. This was a good night of fights, they may not have been the most entertaining but this card from the beginning was high risk, high reward. The odds of all of them going to decision were pretty good, the only one that didn’t seem like it would go to decision would be King Mo v Mousasi.

They opened the show with a well done video package showing the fighters on the main card being broken up and put together like they were rock. The first fight was King Mo vs. Mousasi which was a good choice since it did seemmost likely to end quick. This did not happen. Mousasi looked like he took Mo to lightly in the end he paid for it. Mo was able to take him down seemingly at will and Mousasi couldn’t figure out what to do. In the second round he was able to win the round by being more active off his back, keeping Mo at a distance and hitting him with some short slapping hammer fist punches as well as taking Mo’s back in the final seconds of the round. After that round though both fighters seemed to have gassed. In the 4th and 5th rounds Mo was able to use his wrestling to take Gegard down and control him from the top. This all added up to King Mo becoming the new Strikeforce Light Heavy Weight Champion. Now 7-0 the wrestling standout has a title to his name. Who is going to challenge him though? After Mousasi there isn’t really anyone else.

The second fight which started at around 10 pm in the east was Aoki vs. Melendez. This was the fight I was most looking forward to. With BJ losing to Frankie Edgar this now added more importance when it comes to the scared art of MMA rankings. Melendez came in with the right game plan to beat Aoki. He was able to take Aoki down and push him in to the cage and for the most part stay away from Aoki’s jiu jitsu abilities. Aoki just couldn’t really do anything about it, if it was down in the ground he was up against the fence getting feed some GnP and if it was standing he was easily out struck. This led to Melendez getting a decision win over Aoki and hopefully in his eyes he gets the respect he deserves now.

Shields Henderson was the fight of the night. The first round was huge with Shields getting dropped twice by Henderson’s monstrous right hand the first time though he was still lucid enough to grab a leg and try for a leg lock. In the second round Henderson looked spent and Shields was able to take him down, something many did not expect given Henderson’s wrestling credentials. Once the fight got to the ground Shields was able to get into mount and stay in mount for the remainder of the round. He was hitting Henderson with good, short punches but they did not look like they were doing enough to win him the round handily. The other rounds were all like round two with Shields taking Henderson down and Henderson not really having a answerer. This was a huge upset since many fans (myself included) figured that Henderson would be able to keep it standing and pick Shields apart. Shields proved everyone wrong and showed his heart and beat Dan Henderson to retain the Strikeforce Middleweight Championship.

Then during the post fight interview Jason “Mayhem” Miller randomly got in the cage. What ensued was a brawl on national television and Gus Johnson saying “Well these things happen sometimes in MMA”. Way to bury our sport even more Gus! This was not good for Strikeforce or MMA in general. Hopefully this won’t be picked up by the bigger media outlets. The odds that this Strikeforce debacle will slide by with less media coverage than expected (for the most part) is very likely considering that the NBA and NHL playoffs are getting underway at this time. Most mainstream outlets will have something covering the incident, ESPN and SI showed that they had a article up but you had to do some searching to even find it. Sadly like UFC 112 something that happened at the end of the show is over shadowing the bigger surprises and more importantly stuff that we all should be talking about.

Let me apologize in advance – the article, however short, will take longer to read than the duration of the Dan Henderson vs. Jake Shields match this Saturday night at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

Its not that its a failure on the part of the match makers. No, the fight needed to happen. Shields is the reigning Strikeforce World Middleweight champ and Hendo is one of the most decorated fight veterans in the game today. After negotiations failed with the UFC it only made sense that Scott Coker put Henderson against their top middleweight. It’s a win-win for Strikeforce. If Henderson wins than Strikeforce has solidified itself as a competitor with the UFC for talent in it’s ranks. Not trying to steal anything from Fedor, but until he starts competing with top tier talent in their prime, he will go down as nothing more than a glorified “celebrity” fighter. Arlovski, Tim Sylvia, Rodgers? C’mon now. Anyway if Shields wins (gulp) then Coker has proven to the world that his fighters are indeed at the level of the UFC’s finest.

The fight might go two rounds. While Hendo has all the ability in the world to take Shields down at his leisure, he will probably opt to stand and keep his right hand cocked. When the time is right Hendo will use that hand to drop Shields into a deep, deep, sleep. Not taking anything away from Shields – he will join a long yet elite list of talented fighters that go to the ER for head x-rays after fighting Dan Henderson. To even stand across from Dan you have to be an “A-List” fighter. Shields is such a fighter.

I like both of these guys . Shields is got some slick BJJ but in the end I don’t think he possesses the strength, wrestling, striking, or chin to pose a threat to Dan Henderson.

The nice part about predictions like mine – it’s great when I’m proven wrong. THAT is why we love our sport. It does tend to be unpredictable.

It is public knowledge that following the demise of EliteXC, Dana White stated he felt bad for no one but Jake Shields. This is high praise indeed coming from one who has scrutinized every fighter to emerge in the MMA world for more than a decade. Where skill and presence speak you find Dana White listening, yet to the world at large it appears that Shields has been doing the talking! Are you listening Dana?

Has Shield’s skill spoken loudly enough? has Dana been listening closely enough? Has Dana White been too distracted by thoughts of mergers with Abu Dhabi and medical Drama with Tito Ortiz? The world will find out shortly, in fact, after Striekforce’s April 17th bout! Strikeforce, where the name Shileds reigns supreme, is watching as their champion is preparing to go free agent after his April 17th bout. Some say the move to free agent for Shields is irrelevant being that Dan Henderson is the challenger Shields faces on the 17th. many speculate a new champion for Strikeforce on the 17th, with or without Shields going free agent.

Shields told MMAjunkie, “I am happy with Strikeforce. They’ve given me big fights like I asked for, so I’m happy with them. But also, I do want big fights, and of course the UFC has a lot of big fights as well.”

Apparently Shields has no fear of Dan Henderson, nor does Henderson have anything to do with his planned exit from Strikeforce. However, Shields is a hungry young fighter who continually wants to face the next great challenge. Who will be able to offer Shields not just the next big fight (Henderson), but the next (Alves), and the next (Fitch), and the next (Koschek)? The UFC is where the dominant talent in this division resides. The UFC appears to be the answer to the talent shortage Shields is facing.

Are you listening Mr. White? Shields is talking!

As always, what say you?

Get ready for an exciting night of MMA action as Shamrock Promotions brings the Xtreme Fight Party to the Stratford Inn in St Louis, Missouri on Saturday March 6th. The fourteen bout card features some of the best amateur fighters in the Midwest and a main event featuring two fast rising female mixed martial artists in Amanda Burch and St Louis’ own, (and undefeated) Brittany Anic.

Shamrock Promotions – the Midwest’s premier MMA fight promotion – is co-owned by Finney MMA co-owner Jesse Finney and Rob Donaker. Rob instructs fighters at his gym in St Louis, Missouri and has been in the promotion business for the better part of twelve years. Shamrock holds events approximately every six weeks. Venues range in size from four hundred to over one thousand spectators with each one consistently selling out weeks in advance. Shamrock was also responsible for bringing Strikeforce to St Louis, co-promoting their Lawler vs. Shields event last June at the Scottrade Center. When asked about their relationship with Strikeforce, Rob says “…Strikeforce does it right. In other large MMA organizations the fighters are not allowed to fight outside the company. If you are a new or mid card fighter it can prove hard to make a living with only a couple of fights a year. Strikeforce allows it’s fighters to step out of the organization, fight for different promotions, and make enough money to support their families. Strikeforce puts on great shows and keeps the fighters’ best interest in mind”. While recently visiting Finney MMA, I asked some of the fighters where they see themselves five years from now. The answer was universal – “competing in Strikeforce”. Considering the talent pool of young fighters at Finney’s, the probability of seeing these fighters’ dreams come to fruition is very possible.

If you can still get a hold of a ticket for this event, get one! It promises to be an unforgettable night of hard hitting action. Shamrock Promotions wants to remind you “It’s not just a fight, it’s also a party”.

Further applause should be given to Herschel Walker, who at the age of 47 looks as if he could pass for 27. The man is built!

Recently Gegard Mousasi has let slip that he believes he is going to fight King Mo Lawal at the April Strikeforce show. Now this match up is inevitable given the size and depth of Strikeforce’s roster but is it the right time? King Mo is still green in the sport he has less than 10 fights under his belt. Only two of those fights have even made it to the 3rd round. Nevertheless he has shown to be a student of the game with his love for boxing and coming off like just another fan.

If this fight is happening it has good name power in it which is something Strikeforce is lacking. This is more due to them being new to the business as a whole and general lack of a deep roster. This fight could mean money for them though and to give it away right now when they could tuck it away and put it as the main event of a Showtime event could work out better. If this fight happens I’ll talk more about it then but the real meat of this story is how lacking Strikeforce’s roster is.

It is no secret that the UFC has a monopoly on the Light Heavyweight division. For this reason Strikeforce is forced to make due with what they can get. Now in their Light Heavyweight division they have some good names people will recognize like Sokoudjou, Kevin Randleman, Mousasi and of course King Mo. Those are some familiar names but none of them except for the last two are really hot at the moment. They also don’t have any major prospects coming up aside from Rafael Cavalcante, who is in no way ready to challenge Mousasi for the title.

If they do plan on doing the fight wait to do it until the rumored DREAM Light Heavy Grand Prix is done. With their partnership with DREAM it would be a good way to help lock in talent and scout out new talent. Mousasi is rumored to be participating in the tournament, and if he wins it or goes far, it could leave him out of Strikeforce for the better part of 2010. That is a down side but the upside is that he may be able to bring with him a couple of guys back to Strikeforce. Either way the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight division is not going to get insanely interesting and deep over night, but will grow in due time.

On January 30th Strikeforce looks to start their year off strong with a double header of title fights, a former NFL running back (as well as Heissman Trophy winner) and a former WWE wrestling superstar. But will all that glitters be gold for Strikeforce as they head into Sunrise, Florida? Let’s take a look at the card…

Bobby Lashley (4-0) vs. Wes Sims (22-12-1 w/2 no contests)

Kicking off this card is a match up that was never supposed to happen in the first place. Bobby Lashley, a former WWE wrestling superstar and current TNA wrestler was originally set to face Shane Del Rosario for this card but for unbeknownst reasons (heavily rumoured Shane suffered an undiclosed injury during training) Shane was pulled as Lashley’s opponent. Then Yohan Banks was tapped to face the Strikeforce new comer but when Strikeforce sought for approval of this bout from the Florida State Boxing Commission they were denied. The omission citing the bout as “not being competitive enough” based on the skill level of both fighters and their records. Two opponents were now shot down from facing Lashley and it seemed as if they would never find an opponent. But third time is a charm, right? Wrong. Next up on the chopping block for potential opponents for Lashley was Jimmy Abriz. Although cleared to fight Lashley by the FSBC, Strikeforce opted to not use Jimmy Abriz for unknown reasons. In doing such the hype for a potential fight between Lashley and Ambriz lasted about as long as Todd Duffee vs. Tim Hague.

Finally as if God himself had intervened, we were blessed with our savior of this Lashley opponent debacle. That saviour was……Wes Sims? Yes ladies and gents, Wes Sims would be the one to step up on short notice to face Lashley. Wes may be well known amongst die hard MMA fans for his early run in the UFC in which he lost twice to Frank Mir, but it wasn’t until just recently that his name became more mainstream for his run on the tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter.

Coming into this bout against Lashley, Sims holds a wealth of experience over Lashley, with nearly 40 MMA fights to his name. Although very experienced, Wes has never really excelled in any areas of MMA, remaining lukewarm in all realms of the sport. Lashley on the other hand brings in a strong amateur wrestling base easily giving him the edge on the mat against Wes. As most (amateur) wrestler who break into MMA, Lashley has shown an ever-improving and crisp striking game making him a force standing or on the mat. At the end of the night I believe Lashley will put Sims on his back and begin to throw bombs from a half guard position before ultimately TKOing Sims late in the first round, similar to the way Lashley defeated Bob Sapp earlier last year.

My Pick: Bobby Lashley via 1st Rd. TKO

Herschel Walker (0-0) vs. Greg Nagy (1-1)

I believe a resounding “WTF” comes from most of the MMA world when they hear about this match up, myself included. Here we have a match, which would usually kick off the undercard of any self-respecting event, placed at the mid-lower part of the main card. Why is it there you ask? Well because Herschel Walker, former NFL running back extroardinare, is part of this bout of course! For people who know very little about Herschel’s former NFL experience like myself (the man was playing with the Cowboys before I was even born!) then you’d be surprised to hear that he isn’t a football player in his mid-thirties who couldn’t cut it…no no no, he’s a 47 year old man…though I assume he’d say he’s 47 years young.

This is semi off topic here but i’d like to take a second and say I’m against anyone ever debuting after the age of 40. Honestly, debuting after the age of 40 only ensures your past your prime and on the decline. Until a fighter can debut at the age of 40 or above that age and impress me, I will hold this stance. So Herschel, here’s to you, maybe you can prove me wrong.

Anyway, back on topic, the only ounce of promise I see coming from Herschel Walker is that he comes out of American Kickboxing Academy. One of the best camps in MMA, it features fighters like Jon Fitch and Cain Velasquez. AKA is world renown and if anyone can teach Herschel how to fight it’s the boys at AKA.

His opponent Greg Nagy also holds minimal MMA experience. With only two fights under his belt, Greg Nagy appears to have just slightly more experience then Herschel does. But there’s still a large factor many overlook, the lights of the “big stage”. Many fighters have choked when competing at the highest level and to believe that it couldn’t happen to Herschel or Greg would be foolish. Herschel is making his pro debut while Greg Nagy is having his first ever “big league” fight. I feel like many people will give the edge to Herschel given where he’s training and just how he’s more well known amongst people then Greg Nagy. But alas I will pick who I see as the underdog in Greg Nagy to ruin Herschel’s MMA debut and make Herschel quit after just one fight. I foresee Greg rarely engaging in striking against Herschel, instead opting to clinch against the fence and ride out a slow, one sided Unanimous Decision victory for Greg Nagy.

My Pick: Greg Nagy via Unanimous Decision (Rd.3 5:00)

Melvin Manhoef (24-6-1) vs. Robbie Lawler (18-5 w/1 no contest)

Now here is where the card really picks up. If you like a good scrap you had better not miss this fight! Melvin’s wins come from 23 (T)KOs and 1 decision and Robbie Lawler has 15 of his wins coming by (T)KO, 1 by submission and 2 by decision. You can bet your bottom dollar that one (or both!) or these guys will need their jaws put back in place after this slugfest.

Melvin Manhoef signed with Strikeforce back in mid-December right before the Strikeforce: Evolution card on which Robbie Lawler was set to face off against Trevor Prangley. Due to an injury Trevor was forced to pull out just days before the fight and Robbie was subsequently dropped from the card altogether since they couldn’t find a replacement in time. 1 month later we have a classic slugfest on our hands in which either man can take home the hard sought after “W”. Melvin has been 2-2 in his last 4 fights with both loses coming to the likes of Gegard Mousasi and Paulo Filho by triangle choke and armbar respectively. This Saturday Melvin goes in looking to continue his winning ways and make a statement to the Strikeforce Middleweight division.

Robbie Lawler on the other hand is looking to rebound from a June loss to the current Strikeforce Middleweight Champion, Jake Shields. With both men in need of a win to climb to the top of the 185 lbs. weight class in Strikeforce, you’re guaranteed to see these two go out there and swing for the fences. All in all, I see Manhoef still standing when the dust settles. Robbie Lawler will not get into clinching range and fluster Melvin Manhoef which will ultimately cost him. Lawler will leave enough space between the two of them for Melvin to swing those wild hammers of his, getting nailed by a big right hook followed up by a flurry of punches from Melvin standing over top of him. The referee will be forced to call a stop to the bout late in the first round.

My Pick: Melvin Manhoef via 1st Rd. TKO

Cristiane Santos (8-1) vs. Marloes Coenen (17-3) for the Strikeforce Women’s Lightweight Championship

On August 15th, 2009, Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos became the first Strikeforce Women’s Lightweight Champion. It was on this same card that she took part in the first women’s MMA bout to Main Event a major promotion’s card. Her opponent would be who many considered the “poster girl” of MMA, Gina Carano. Cyborg would end up defeating Carano via TKO in the dying seconds of the first round, thus capturing the belt. Following this win it was announced that Marloes Coenen would likely be the new number one contender for Cyborg’s belt.

Unfortunately, Cyborg would suffer an injury putting off the bout and Marloes would be tapped to face Erin Toughill at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers. Going into the bout Erin had to be confident for she had defeated Marloes previously in a 2004 bout. Erin Toughill would withdraw from the proposed fight due to a medical condition and instead Marloes would face Roxanne Modafferi. Marloes notched her 12th submission win, submitting Modafferi early in the first round by armbar. With this win, Santos vs. Coenen was set for the future. This Saturday they will finally meet under the Strikeforce banner for the belt and to further women’s MMA. Santos comes in with an 8 fight win streak, going on a tear since suffering her only loss during her first fight back in 2005. Marloes on the other hand will try to string together two consecutive wins this Saturday while trying to steal the title away from Santos.

If this fight remains standing Santos will be in her realm where as if it hits the mat Marloes will gain the edge. Santos’ sole loss comes by way of kneebar. With her only loss by submission and going up against a fighter who specialize in submissions, Santos’ odds seem a lot less lofty than what some may let on. I will pick the underdog in this fight and choose the challenger in Marloes Coenen to bring out the upset and submit Santos by Rear Naked Choke at an earlier point of the fight.

My Pick: Marloes Coenen via 2nd Rd. Rear Naked Choke

Nick Diaz vs. Marius Zaromskis for the Vacant Strikeforce Welterweight Title

Easily the most intriguing match up on the card, Diaz and Zaromskis offer a very interesting fight between two fighters who hold potential to be two of the greats in the Welterweight division. Diaz, a black belt under Caesar Gracie as well as a veteran of the UFC, Elite XC and even having a fight in Pride at one point, has proven to be one of the most entertaining and controversial fighters of our time. He’s a man who speaks his mind, regardless of how offensive some may find what comes out of his mouth, and because of that fans have come to love him or hate him. His opponent on the other hand appears to be the exact opposite, a silent assassin of sorts who lets his hands (and head kicks) do the talking recently. Nick is coming off a win over Scott Smith back in June and is on a 5 fight win streak going into the title fight. Nick was slated to face Joe Riggs for the vacant Welterweight belt in August in a rematch to their bout at UFC 57 in which Riggs was victorious via Unanimous Decision. Joe Riggs would end up pulling out of the bout and was hospitalized due to a reaction to a drug he took . Jay Hieron would instead step in to face Diaz for the belt. But again the potential fight for the belt would get destroyed. The California State Athletic Comission would not grant Nick his fight license for failing to attend a pre-fight drug test. As a result Jay Heiron would take on TUF 7 alumni Jesse Taylor in a normal Welterweight bout.

Marius Zaromskis remains relatively unknown to most American MMA fans. Marius would participate in the DREAM Welterweight Grand Prix earlier last year and eventually win it. In the process of winning the Grand Prix, Marius would string together two head kick KO finishes back-to-back in the same night. In Marius’ next bout at DREAM 12 he would once again win by a head kick KO in only 19 seconds. When asked during a Strikeforce: Miami conference call if he looks for the head kick finishes Marius replied “I don’t really look for a high kick, because when you look for something you end up being the one who’s getting knocked out. If I see it there in a split second I’ll take advantage of it. If it’s not there then I’ll use some other weapons. But, I do not look for a high kick”. Going into the title bout for the vacant Welterweight bout, Marius rides a 5 fight win streak and looks to over throw the unorthodox striker and superior grappler in Nick Diaz. With a win in this bout Marius could launch himself into the mainstream MMA spotlight.

Going into this bout each fighter has the tools to win with Nick being the superior grappler whilst some would say Marius is the superior striker. In the end, I see the colourful Nick Diaz using his unorthodox striking abilities to frustrate Marius and prevent him from mounting significant offense. After several hard fought rounds Diaz will display his grappling prowess by sinking in a form of choke against Marius at some point through out the third round.

My Pick: Nick Diaz via 3rd Rd. Rear Naked Choke

There you have it, my predicitions and breakdowns for Strikeforce: Miami, a card lacking only Jay Hieron being in the televised portion of the card. On a side note be sure to watch the Joe Riggs vs. Jay Hieron fight for FREE on EASPORTSMMA.COM right before the televised portion of the Strikeforce: Miami card. This bout promises to be one of the better fights on the card yet tragically falls to the undercard.
